More 1920's Costume Ideas

20's Showgirl

The man in your life will bust his buttons when he sees his 1920s showgirl! Created in the mold of the flapper costume, the 1920 showgirl's finery resembles the risqué Casino de Paris revue with lots of feathers and barely-there lingerie, loads of jewelry, fishnet stockings held by garter bands and, of course, high heel stilettos. Check out the white sequined roaring twenties costumes Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger wore at the end of Chicago!" Mentioning showgirls and Paris in the same breath brings to mind the "Can-Can". Women dancers lift their dresses up in front while kicking their legs up to the ceiling. Originally, the French word Can-Can meant "Scandal" or "Edge" since they performed the dance at the edge of the stage and the legs were bare from the stockings to the frilly panties.

Gangster Costume

Wanna be rough and tough? Grab that fedora or gangster hat, don that dapper pinstriped 20s outfit, add your tommy gun (replica of course) and you're ready to set your world on its rear! You might even pull off the 1920's Zoot suit, complete with double-breasted jacket and hip-hugger pants. Add a pair of wingtips or spats and you have completed your roaring twenties costume! Don't know what spats are? They are cloth or leather garters that cover the upper part of the shoe and ankle and are fastened underneath with a strap for the finishing touch!

Gangster Moll Costumes

Every gangster must have a "Moll". Dress yourself in a double-breasted pinstriped jacket and match it with a skirt (and stilettos) or hip-hugger pants. Just slip on a tie and you're dressed to kill! Remember that no respectable gangster's moll would go out without her replica Tommy gun! Did you know the Tommy gun's full name was Thompson submachine gun? It became infamous during Prohibition times and was used by both criminals and law officers. Other names for it were "Chicago typewriter" and "Chicago Piano".

1920's Maids and Butlers

Instead of the stereotypical flapper or 20's gangster costumes, try a roaring 20s maid costume accessorizing with a white cotton apron. Wear a black calf length dress and a white "muffin cap" and you can create the look of the prim and proper chambermaid that 1920's homes were clamoring for! However, if it's the sexy bedchamber maid look your going for, pick up some fish net stockings, a couple of "hot" garters, grab that feather duster, and voila'! Here's a little hint: If you plan on lighting candles for the bachelor Master of the house, dip them in salt solution or mild detergent for a few hours and place them in the freezer overnight - this will extend the life of the candles.
